It’s easy to think of sodium as that white stuff we sprinkle on food—but in reality, it’s hidden in a lot of the packaged and processed foods that make their way into our lives for convenience and shelf-life. Think: salad dressings, canned soups, frozen meals, deli meats, and even “healthy” wraps or breads. And now that electrolyte and energy drinks are heavily marketed to the general public, not just to athletes, people often assume they are naturally low in some electrolytes, one of them being sodium. However, as you will read on, sodium is highly regulated in the body, and most Americans consume plenty, especially if they regularly eat these foods and drinks.

Sodium Storage: What the Research Shows
A 2020 study published in the Journal of Hypertension revealed something fascinating: excess sodium doesn’t just float around in our bloodstream. It gets stored in our skin, skeletal muscle, and even brain tissue. When we’re young and metabolically healthy, our immune system steps in to help drain out that stored sodium using lymphatic vessels. But as we age—and particularly if we develop chronic conditions like diabetes or kidney disease—that process slows down.
So what happens? Sodium accumulates, leading to chronic inflammation, muscle wasting, and added stress on the heart. Some studies even link this sodium buildup to conditions like multiple sclerosis, chronic kidney disease, and heart failure.

How to Cut Back and Still Enjoy the Flavor.
The good news? You don’t have to eliminate sodium entirely. It is an essential mineral. But reducing excess sodium—especially from processed foods that also contain added sugar and fat—can support your long-term health. Here are some realistic ways to dial it down:
1. Cook More at Home (Even Just a Few Meals)
Even two extra homemade meals a week can help. Use fresh or frozen vegetables, herbs, and spices to flavor your food instead of relying on salt-laden sauces or mixes.
2. Check the Nutritional Label
When buying packaged foods, check the sodium content per serving. Aim for less than 400mg per serving, and be cautious of serving sizes that appear smaller than they actually are, which can make the sodium content look lower than it really is.

3. Rinse Canned Foods
If canned beans or veggies are your go-to, just rinse them under water for 10–15 seconds to remove up to 40% of the sodium.
4. Choose “Low Sodium” or “No Salt Added”
Not every product will have this, but when they do, it can make a big difference—especially in broths, tomato products, and snack foods.
5. Rebuild Your Flavor Toolkit
Try lemon juice, vinegar, garlic, onion powder, turmeric, smoked paprika, or fresh herbs to add bold flavor without the sodium hit.
6. Watch the Sneaky Sources
Breads, cheese, cured meats, bottled dressings, and even “plant-based” snacks can be surprisingly high in sodium to enhance the flavor or for preserving foods. We’re not saying don’t enjoy them, but maybe not all in one day.
